To meet the increasing demand for new sustainable products, many research activities at Innventia focus on inventing new materials and products made from cellulose and other renewable raw materials, such as by-products from the forest industry or gluten. Four promising areas have gained a special interest: wood-based biorefinery, renewable composites, nanocelluloses and active materials.
For papermaking the raw fibre material is more and more becoming an important part of product and process optimisation. Due to the global economic circumstances, it is important to have a thorough knowledge of various kinds of fibres, geographic origins, types of wood, recycling, etc. At Innventia there are many research activities related to the properties of future wood and fibre sources, the effects of climate change and the problems and opportunities of a change in fibre raw material.
The production of paper also requires other raw materials, such as fillers and pigments, whose properties can be optimised in relation to the specific application involved.
